Strategy Metals Bulletin 63
Aims to update investors on developments in the world of strategy metals – crucial inputs to industry, defense and technology innovation
This week’s bulletin sees aliens recognizing rare earth elements, observes a set-back for Avalon, and discusses the enhanced potential for M&A activity in the Athabasca uranium companies.
Aliens recognize REE
I initially thought the asteroid mining story to be of the entertainment kind, and treated it with what I thought was an appropriate measure of irony. However, the news flow concerning the topic is very persistent, and plans are becoming more concrete. Former NASA officials have begun to map the rocks orbiting in our solar system, and Obama has approved an unmanned mission that is destined to be launched in 2016, land on an asteroid, and return with samples in 2023. By which time most of our scarce metals will have run out.
Obama en Jim
Jim Rogers, interview in Economic Times:
"What is happening is the prices are going through the roof because the Chinese do control the supply…. A lot of other people are opening mines because they can make a lot of money and governments are behind the companies opening new mines. So it's all going to bring a new supply and eventually the price of rare earth will come down again. But in the meantime until the new mines can come on stream, somebody is going to make a lot of money"

Strategy Metals Bulletin 62
Aims to update investors on developments in the world of strategy metals – crucial inputs to industry, defense and technology innovation
This week’s bulletin looks at Japan locking up REE sources outside of China, we fly by the latest in the moon-mining phantasies, look at interesting comments on the criticality of copper, and see a Chinese REE separation company list on the London AIM index.
Japan locks up rare earth element supplies from non-Chinese sources
Japan will soon be able to supply rare earth elements (REE) from sources outside of China for the first time in recent history. Japan, the largest user of REE after China, will import more than 14% of its REE demand from India and Kazakhstan, in the near future.
Analysts and industry professionals will review the supply of rare earths, their current demand, potential new uses, recycling, current production and future supply projections.
Keynote speaker at MME 2012, Mark Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Molycorp, Inc., USA will present "An update on Mountain Pass and the Rare Earth Market", whilst other rare earth experts will share the latest market developments and trends, including:
- "Rare Earths and the Challenges of Change in China" Clint Cox, President, The Anchor House, Inc., USA
- "Magnets for green energy and the environment" Ed Richardson, President, United States Magnetic Materials Association, USA

China will start allocating value-added tax permits to rare earth companies in Sichuan and Inner Mongolia from May 1 in a bid to regulate overproduction of the mineral, sources told Platts Thursday.
Grafiet is al 250% gestegen!
Eerder schreef ik al over grafiet. Nu een persbericht: For starters, graphite is in a "rare earth"-type situation because 70% of supply is controlled by China. Industrialization in that country—as well as in India and other emerging markets—has led to increased demand for graphite in its traditional use as an additive to steel. The 30% of supply that comes from outside of China is typically used in full by the country where it's mined. There's only a handful operating graphite mines in the entire world.
